Hurricane Melissa is forecast to escalate to a rare Category 5 hurricane as it veers toward Jamaica, delivering life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 06:00 GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to reach land by Tuesday, according to meteorological authorities.

Warnings of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been issued as Melissa generates up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been advised.

Melissa is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic season, which typically ends in late autumn.

Most Intense Hurricane Threat

A highest-level storm is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is projected to diminish in strength to a category four hurricane before making landfall on Jamaica, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it hits the island.

Immediate Safety Steps

With tropical storm-level wind and rainfall anticipated well in advance long before it passes over Jamaica's central region - possibly even the capital, Kingston - alerts state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"A multi-day period of damaging winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and many rock slides," urged meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated: "I know that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are very concerned, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"But the best way to handle nervousness and any unease and concern is to be prepared."

Residents are being instructed to secure their homes with protective bags and timber panels, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Broader Consequences

Advisories are also active for parts of Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where this storm is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the midweek period.

Landslides presently generated by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Course

Melissa is forecast to pass over Cuba by midweek before traveling via the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the time it reaches Cuba, it is forecast to have weakened to a third-level hurricane.
