One two-month voyage through the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the group for a rest. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back after some time after the crew realised the lady was missing.

An extensive search operation found her remains the following day.

Authorities are investigating the event, together with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Head of the cruise operator said that guests and staff on the vessel were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he further stated that travelers would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via chartered flights".

Officials also issued an latest statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" prohibiting any new passengers from entering the liner.
