Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
